Talk:WordPress in Your Language

Maybe the "official" source of the translations should be also mentioned: http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress-i18n/ (many translators from the polyglots list are publishing their translations there)

Since I'm not familiar with translation processes, what do you mean by "source" translations? Maybe this belongs with "translating" and not Language choices? Don't know. But see if you can find a spot for it here or put it in "Languages".
"Source" is the repository for all translation files, and this the definitive place where to find a translation for a given language, albeit a bit tedious to get through.
http://svn.automattic.com/wordpress-i18n/ru_RU/trunk/messages/, for instance, is where you'll find the source Russian translation (.po file), and the compiled translation file (.mo) - which is to be downloaded and properly installed. IMHO, it's a bit to geeky to put it what ought to be an accessible page for everyday people - or put a direct link to each language's .mo ? XiBe 12:19, 25 Jul 2005 (UTC)
I'm also very unhappy with the cluttered look of the language list. I'm thinking about categorizing it by continent or some form of group to help structure it "pretty". Like Europe, Asia, Middle East, South America...but then I started thinking, where does Russia fit in? It "isn't" really "Asian" and how to divide up Europe like the EU? And so on. Anyway, thoughts on cleaning this up somehow? It's only going to get longer. Lorelle 23:03, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I think you could say that Russia is, linguistically, closer to Europe than Asia - then again, I don't speak the language, so can't tell for sure. Most directories list Russia as part of Europe. Wikipedia's Asia page mentions that "Asia as a political division consists of the part of Eurasia and nearby islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, often excluding Russia."
As for the rest, I think sorting by region is a jolly good idea. XiBe 12:19, 25 Jul 2005 (UTC)
Languages aren't the same as countries though. They don't stay put, because their speakers move all over the place! Imagine if the default language for WordPress wasn't English -- in which region of the world would you then place the English translation? Even smaller languages spread out -- there are Welsh-speaking communities in South America (Patagonia), for instance. Besides, a resident of, say, New York, could want to set up a blog in Chinese -- so the geography is a bit irrelevant. Wouldn't an alphabetical list be easier? --Iwan 10:31, 9 Sep 2005 (GMT)

There is no "Hispanic" language. Recently the term is used in linguistics to name a language family (e.g. Basque, Catalan, Galician, Spanish, Valencian and sometimes Portuguese) - but you cannot have a translation in "Hispanic". It is Spanish/Español (or castellano, especially if spoken in Spain). Moshu 14:24, 8 Sep 2005 (GMT)

Usually Hispanic is used in Spanish when we want to talk about something from Spain (not English meaning). So, I've just merged Hispanic with Spanish. PS 23:25, 8 Sep 2005 (GMT)

Reopen editing

Can we please open the document for editing again?

Hopefully the reason for the block has diminished somehwat over time. I've lowered the protection level to "block new accounts". See if that's any good for you. mrmist 17:15, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

Thank you :) DaMsT 23:12, 13 February 2011 (GMT+1)
