Note from NuclearMoose 22:27, 9 Jan 2005 (GMT)

Important: Please read and follow the Codex Guidelines before creating a new page.

After creating the new page, use [[Category:New_page_created]] at the bottom of the page, and it will be flagged for quality control and editing, if necessary.

Thank you for contributing to Codex!

It took me a while to learn the ins and outs of the Codex system, and one of them is to post a message to a specific person in their User Discussion page. This way, a note pops up that says "Hey, you have messages" to let you know. The discussion pages for the articles are for discussions related to that article. I wouldn't have seen the note you left on one of those articles for days if I hadn't checked the Special:Recentchanges page and saw your note just before going to bed. The theory is that someone (like me) posts a note on your user page discussion page, and then you reply by clicking their name in the signature and going to their user page discussion page to post a reply. It makes following conversations in the Codex horrible, but conversations are "supposed" to be on the mailing list and the Codex talks are just answer and reply kind of things.

And thanks for staying on top of these things with me. I really appreciate the help. Lorelle 02:50, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Gotcha, will do! I'm new to wikis in general, so I appreciate the tip. Substantive reply on your page, then... :)

And I will see it in the AM when I have a brain left in my head.... Lorelle 02:59, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Brains are totally overrated; I say let the zombies have 'em. yami 03:07, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I sure wish someone held my hand during the first phase of my trial by fire into this Codex! Okay, I did some checking and after the initial page has been created and is off your user site, then the guidelines stub for creating a new page can go but the NEW PAGE stub has to stay. Confusing stuff.

Also, did you figure out how to make a subpage off of your user page? I think you did, but just to be clear, cuz now the fuzzy brain is waking up after my early morning walk, type in on your main user page a link surrounded with double square brackets [ that says User:Yami_McMoots/Title of Page. Save your user page and then click on the red link and you are on your new page. Also, be aware that every "rough draft" you publish on the Codex will be exposed to Google within a day or two, open to search by anyone. Make sure even your rough draft is as accurate as possible to avoid big time errors going out to the public. This is a new discovery and we're still dealing with it.

You can list links within the Codex without the underline to represent space so "Title_of_Page" can be "Title of Page" and still work, but not for external links.

Just a few things you probably already know, but I sure wish someone had told me! Lorelle 12:58, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Okay, so I warned you my brain was on scramble. [[Category:New_page_created]] is the right tag to leave in there. That's what I meant by "new page". Sorry for the confusion. Okay, lesson number 2 in codex/wiki tech - when you don't want a link to be a link, like used in an example, you put <nowiki>http://www.somesitesomewhere.com/</nowiki> so it won't show the "link". That took me ages to find.
I've just posted Your_Post_Meta_Data_Section. There is a lot of code wrapped up in there and I'm sure I've left some little nickynookie thing in or out. I need a second set of eyes. Can you take a peak for me? Thanks so much! Lorelle 21:05, 10 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Need You

Hey, Yami - doing good work I see. Couple of things. I've just posted on my User Page User:Lorelle/Articles_for_WordPress_Lessons as a test drive for signing up for WordPress Lessons and giving them some formal structure. Can you take a look see and check in the discussion about criteria and such for me and see if you like it, fix it, or hate it?

Also, I just found out that the Matt posted a link to my Codex User Page in one of his unwelcome thank yous, which not only led me to find out that not only are our user pages open to the public, people can link to them and invite folks to come see our chicken scratch. I was not happy and have totally cleaned up my User Page now as I was using it, like you, for a sloppy to do list and scratch pad. The purpose of the User Page is to list activity solely related to our work on the Codex, not our personal gunk unless it applies to our work on the Codex, so I just thought I'd let you know. Our blogs and sites are the places for our dirty work, I guess. I do hope we can get our user areas protected somehow soon as I need to have the space for people to check and edit before they read the public eye.

Thanks muchos! Lorelle 15:49, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I'm down with people seeing my dirty work - maybe they'll find homes for some of the bits and bobs, or have suggestions for the half-finished stuff. There's a fine line between sharing useful tidbits and descending into utter ego-driven madness, of course, so yeah I'll see about cleaning it up some ;) -yami 21:35, 1 May 2005 (UTC)

Hey, Yami, whatever you can do is appreciated. Just check the Special:Recentchanges page or Special:Allpages or even the Category:Copyedits - just hunt and peck, but keep an eye out on Lessons as more are coming in hard and fast. Thanks for everything. Lorelle 02:56, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

Hi Yami McMoots. I noticed you're changing 'stylized' in several places. Is that something to be on the look-out for when doing edits? MichaelH 13:15, 3 May 2005 (UTC)

Importing Content

Hi,

I moved the old importing from other blogging software to Importing Content which is a better-suited title since, once can also import category structure, comments etc, besides posts, and some of the other systems are not exactly "blogging software". I hope this works for you, since you requested the renaming. That was a nice catch, thank you :)

Title Case Renames

Yami,

Please continue to mark incorrectly capitalized titles. I will fix them, one by one, when I find time - maybe I will not be able to finish them all in one go, since the process involves updating links codex-wide and moving twice (since I cannot move (rename) a page to a similarly named page, but with diff. capitalization). I appreciate your marking these pages, and I just wanted to let you know that I will get around to finishing this, along with other maintenance tasks - please do not feel that no one is renaming the pages. Just wanted to let you know not to feel discouraged and stop tagging renamable pages because of that :)

Renaming is now complete, thank you for your help in tagging the pages.

Some plugins categories are hidden

Hi Yami, just a comment, to my knowledge the Plugins-page doesn't list Plugins/Mail subpage, even though it definitely should. :) I couldn't edit the Plugins-page, it gives an error, so maybe you could include the Plugins/Mail-subpage to the list. If you have a way to check if there are any other Plugins-subpages hidden like that (no links from Plugins-page) pls feel free to do so. Cheers, Pete.

Edit: On a second try, no errors editing the Plugins-page, so added Mail. Any other subpages lurking there like that?

PETE!!! I hate adding a note on someone else's user page, but Pete, if you catch this, could you please create a User Page so we can communicate with you and compliment you on your efforts on the Codex. Thanks. Lorelle 00:08, 21 May 2005 (UTC)
I went through Special:Allpages and found that no plugin pages were linking to Plugins/Auto shutoff comments, everything else seems okay - good catch! yami 03:08, 22 May 2005 (UTC)

More Technical Stuff to Learn

Great article on the feeds. Seriously impressed. It's moved and looks good, but check the discussion for a couple minor things.

Also, I noticed that you used <code><pre> when setting up the examples. You only need to use the PRE. I'm working overtime (and if you find it STAMP IT OUT) to remove the use of CODE from the Codex because it turns the background blue when used in the text, which clutters things up. I cleaned up one page yesterday with over 98 uses of the page. Instantly the whole article became more readable and clean looking. It's replaced now with TT, which you used beautifully in the text of the article.

Soooooo, what's next!!  ;-) Lorelle 14:21, 23 May 2005 (UTC)

Code vs TT is a tough subject here. Code may work in your site, but you've discovered that this wiki has a mind of its own on what is usable and not. Boy, I'd love to use equal signs instead of HTML on my site sometimes. ;-)
The CSS for Code is legit. It actually creates a distinction behind the code which is enjoyed by those who use it for MASSIVE coding blocks. But we use it in the context of the text and it looks bad, cluttered. We also use the PRE and space before code blocks to generate the blue background container for the code, which is a better look to highlight the code instead of the gentler blue tone behind CODE. This is set by the master wiki folks at Mediawiki, and there is enough to do without changing the CSS on this site. I've asked regarding other things that make me...visually irritated but nothing comes of it. So I work with what I gots. You know how that it. I've been cleaning these up for three months after I found the difference.
But you did get the use of CODE before PRE is double duty and not necessary since the PRE puts things in monospace with the background? Sure you did.
We use what we have. Did you see the note about the Wiki Week? I really want to promote it and get people who used to help reactivated and new people going. I'll probably need your sharp eye and friendly, hard working attitude and support to help with this. There is a lot of hard core documentation that HAS to get done soon, like your RSS article. Just the basic core stuff we need to get written up.
So what is next on your agenda? And thanks for the nice words. And don't forget, you can email me, too if you don't want to use the Codex funky message system. And congrats again on the plugin. Very cool. And complicated! Wow. Lorelle 02:30, 24 May 2005 (UTC)

Codex Cleanup Week June 18-26

REMINDER

WE NEED YOU!

Codex Cleanup Week is Saturday, June 18 through Sunday, June 26. This is a major push to clean up the Codex and stuff it full of great documenation so we can relax a little this summer.

Thanks for everything you do! Lorelle 21:45, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Cleaning Up Details

Just wanted to check in and see how you are doing and if you are ready for your drafts to be released. You've done some brilliant work and I want to get it cleaned up and out into the real world. Thanks!!! Lorelle 20:09, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

We Thank You

The Codex Documenation Team and all of WordPress thank you for your time, effort, and contributions during this past Codex Cleanup Week. It has been amazing. Over twenty new documents were added, and more are still in the works that will be released over the next couple of weeks. The entire Codex is now categorized, improving the ability of users to find the related information they are looking for.

The next big Codex-related event is WordPress Backup Week July 23-30. The project will promote backing up your WordPress database and site for the user's protection and further develop the relationship between the Codex and the WordPress Support Forum. Documentation volunteers will be cleaning up and expanding the backup and restore information on the site and Forum volunteers will be readied to help users in the Forum walk through their site backups. We need your help.

We are also starting a page for information and sign up for a variety of Fundraising and Promotions Events for WordPress and your help is needed there, too.

Thanks again for helping.

Lorelle and the whole Cleanup Codex volunteer team
