The example is insufficient. Need to give the category hierarchy that's assumed by the statement written.
I used `<?php echo get_category_parents($catid, TRUE, ' » '); the_title(); ?>` and was surprised to get the category twice, viz., with Appearances as a subcategory of News, I got "News » Appearances » Appearances".
