User talk:Lorelle/Front Page Project

This is where we can talk about what we want for the front page of the Codex.

Summary August 25, 2011

We've had some great discussions on the mailing list about the revised version of the front page. Much thanks goes to everyone who helped kick our ass on this. Here is a quick summary.

  1. We agreed short, simple, and concise was best.
  2. The changed front page was set back with a minimized version of the previous long standing front page.
  3. The block of "speed" links at the top appears to be appreciated so it is left in there.
  4. The categorization of the key content points are learning, themes, plugins, contributing to development, and give back.
  5. A funnel approach to structure continues to be welcome, links to TOC pages specializing in the subject.

Things that need to be addressed:

  1. What links need to really be under each section.
  2. Currently, an advanced section dealing with specific usages and development around WordPress is missing from the front page. What should it be called and what needs to be in it to differentiate it from the other sections?
  3. TOC pages linked to from the front page need to be reviewed and updated so all articles that need to be within them are in them, and the section groups help people quickly drill down to the information they need.
  4. The FAQ pages would be excellent to add but require further updates before they should see the front page light of day. :D
