Questions in general

Is there an editing technique for posting a link to a fake site like those used in examples that doesn't turn the http reference into an actual link?

Yup :) <nowiki> tags:

<nowiki>http://www.example.com</nowiki>

displays: http://www.example.com --MDAWaffe 01:49, 25 Jan 2005 (GMT)

Two questions about this section of NewLine:
1st: I don't know what this means, "Sufficient as wikitext code is <br />, the XHTML code <br /> is not needed, the system produces this code." It seems to say it's sufficient, and then that it's not needed ... which stops my brain.

2nd: This little snippet has <p> open at the end of the last line ... I can't tell if that's trying to show something or is a typo.
Example:
You can break lines
without starting a new paragraph.<p>

Layout

  • Okay, I'm going bonkers over this. Right after the heading for LINKS/URL there is an ending </table> code. I've tracked it down and it is the ending code for the table for the links. Why is shows up - I can't figure it out. I've been poking through it for a couple of days.
I fix it by removing the code from the end of the table, but then the IMAGES heading comes up to the top under the LINKS/URL heading. There is something screwy but I need some help to clean it up.

  • There were some unclosed <p> tags. I got rid of them and just replaced them with two line breaks.

    • I was so busy blaming the table, I missed those. Thank you!

  • I fixed the table layout problems. There were conflicts with PRE and NOWIKI tags in the Character formatting section. I just escaped the brackets, removed a /PRE or two et voila!

* Apropos "NewLine" (Yes, I use CamelCase habitually ... I think it's an entirely valid and communicative gesture. Mnemonic, too!): I often throw breaks into text. For me layout is an aspect of semantics.
When "new paragraph" inserts more white space than "new line" then I think I have a choice.

Editing Help Requests

  • I'd like to see an example (unless I missed it) of the recommended method for including a footnote, like for more info or source credit.
  • I'd also like to see this changed to a more "user friendly" look (I'll do it but it won't be for a while) so it is easier to find the example, and SEE the example results - seeing what the result will look like is really difficult.
  • Improved table of contents so things like "stylizing text", "links", "using HTML", and some of the larger groupings are broken down into smaller related groups under a main heading so specific editing help can be found quicker.
  • When applicable, add a link in the example to the wiki encyclops-o-pedia (whatever it is called) for further instructions and examples.
  • Use of stubs, like New Page, and how to get the table of contents to show up when it doesn't. I think the trick is to make sure there is a heading at the top of the page in a single = but it doens't always work. Most of the time, but not always. I'm sure some of us would like to know why and when it works and doesn't and how to make it appear if we don't "want" a title on the first paragraph.

I can make some of these changes, but after the Wiki Weekend, my butt and fingers needs a rest. I can put it on my to do list, but I'd rather whoever was in charge would consider these "improvements", if they want them. Lorelle 14:45, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Meta: this page layout

This page makes no sense. As mentioned above, there's the "you don't need <BR /> you can use <BR />" problem. The rest of the page is similarly confusing. Can someone please just spell out the rules? Is this a homemade wiki? if so, where's the source code? IF not, is it better documented elsewhere? Vynce 07:44, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
