Talk:Excerpt

It would be helpful to note here that manual excerpts can contain HTML. Ancawonka 07:04, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Removal of links

Is there a new policy that does not allow external links in Codex articles? If not, why was the link to the op111.net article removed from the Resources at the end? Is it not consider useful to WordPress users? It is the most complete article on the topic. Demetris 13:31, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Demetris - Just get a little suspicious when the author of an article writes a barebones Codex article, then adds a link to a full-blown article. Just seems more like that author might be using the Codex article to drive traffic to the site. --MichaelH (talk) 17:00, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
MichaelH - You are right to get suspicious, but I think that cases should be considered in context and on merit. I started this article for two reasons: 1. I saw from the reaction to my op111.net article that people did not know much about the WP Excerpt and that they appreciated what they learned, and 2. The link from the UI was to the get_the_excerpt() article, which is for developers, not end users. That is, the Codex had nothing for end users about the Excerpt. -- I did not intend to write a barebones article (and it is certainly not barebones compared to what we had before) and I would be happy to extend it, if people think it should have more meat. My intention was to write something that would stand on its own (like I’m doing now for Child Themes), and not something that would be bait for external links. -- Also, I think the “barebones” characterization is unfair. Writing a concise article on this feature of WordPress is not an easy thing, and, certainly, it is not something I would be able to do if I had not spent days doing research for the op111.net article.
