Talk:FAQ Old

Instructions for the FAQ

If you feel a question here could be asked in a different way but still need the same linked answer, please do modify and add it.

If you have the question, but do not have the answer links, please add in the section at the base of this page.

Be aware that your question will be edited and changed to a different section if necessary.

Previously bold heading made h2 to assist page browsing and editing. Some FAQ's added --Podz 16:39, 14 Nov 2004 (UTC)

CSS questions, unless VFAQ, not to be asked please. We can point to helpful external resources, and we do have the forums. New law added :) --Podz 22:32, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

The plan:

    • Create a single FAQ page
    • Create the following pages (initially):
   Answers/Installation
   Answers/Importing
   Answers/Configuration
   Answers/Modifying
   Answers/Layout

Using the faq.wp.org and the forums as the base, shift information over.

Add additional info which has come to light since the source was written.

Interlink the Answer pages to full pages and each other where appropriate.

The FAQ page to have - where appropriate - multiple questions leading to the same answers.

The question "It says cannot connect to a db !!" needs a page all of it's own ?

It may be that the faq page gets too large, so it can be split once it has reached a huge size. Splitting too soon could lead to replication and will annoy due to page switching while compiling. Questions which do not have answers, or questions which do not appear to be asked should be added to the list.

Please add potential questions where needed if you have the answer to link to. If you do not have the answer, please add it at the base of the page.

>>>Okay, so I've got 1.5final installed, but what's going to be in 1.6, and when will it be released ? And will it have multi-blogging, make the coffee and come with free chocolate ? <<<<

I understand where this comes from, but is it still necessary?

hehe - Noo... even though coffee is important :) --Podz 10:28, 6 Feb 2005 (GMT)

Some of us live by tea and chocolate, a much better way to get our caffine, so don't be discrimating. ;-)
Changes to page:
  • Separated the "long" Install section into subcategories for easier viewing.
  • Cleaned up the top introduction section.
  • Posted the comments and instructions on how to add to this page in the Discussion section...more appropriate.
  • Cleaned up the "questions to be linked" and called it Questions Still Under Development
  • Moved two of the completed answers in the Questions Still Under Development section into their appropriate section.
  • Moved "import from..." to its own section under Installation with links to the articles. (I know its redundant but people will be looking and searching for names to their software)
Send chocolate if these were okay things to do.

Under Configuration, I pulled out the spam stuff into its own subcat. There are just too many complaints about spam on the boards so I felt this should be highlighted.

Also, what's the difference between Configuration and Modifying? They are really related? Are we overlapping or can someone tell me the real difference between the two so we can keep them separate.

Lorelle 01:47, 11 Feb 2005 (GMT)

The way I look at it, Configuration is getting the default features in WordPress working, changing permissions, and in general, making (and implementing) choices about how to use the default tools or features WordPress offers. Modification is when you try to get WordPress to make coffee - that is - when you try to get hack it, or change some core files etc to get it to do more than it does by default (or to do it in a different-from-default way).

Excellent explanation and how I figured it should work. Looks good. Thanks.

FAQ#Administration seems to have the wrong link in Can my posts have titles instead of /index.php?p=76?

I would edit it, but I'm not sure what the link should be. Ideally, a passage with info about Permalinks and mod_rewrite linking to further info on each? I'm not competent to fix this as this is a particular area I'm trying to learn about!--Al-khowarizmi 10:59, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

Good catch! Sometimes things get messed up so this is a great catch. Thanks! I changed it to link to Using Permalinks. Keep up the great work! Lorelle 14:11, 14 May 2005 (UTC)

How is Load balancing accomplished with wordpress?

The scenario is this: I would like to host a wordpress on hosting servers HS1 and HS2. The servers sit behind a load balancing appliance. When a user enters in, say, http://domain.com/wordpress they will be routed to the portal hosted by HS1 or HS2 depending on the load balancer settings. Let's just say HS1 this time. They will remain on the same server for the duration of their session. Later load balancer sends same user request to HS2.

Does anyone have any insight or guidance on how to enable it for wordpress? How tackle caching and session management?
