Talk:List of hosting providers

Carthik — what was wrong with the Potent Products addition from 63.205.56.208?

We had a custom that only logged in people could add a good hosting provider, after being identified, at the earlier wiki - for reasons of credibility, and to avoid incorrect entries (by owners of the hosting services, for one). A brief note explaining why it's good would be nice too, as would restricting recommendations to one's own hosts...

That does sound like a good idea. I'll add a note about the requirement to log in.

Why this is a bad idea

As nice as an idea this is we can't have people, registered or not, putting random hosts on here. Some reasons:

  • No trust metrics -- I don't care someone recommends a host unless I know them from Adam
  • Hosting is a dirty business
  • Fake accounts and testimonials will be created. I know because it happens on the forums with some frequency
  • Bad hosts will ruin the page for good ones
  • The criteria "can run WordPress" isn't very useful

Ultimately this is a larger strategy issue. I do think we should provide recommendations for hosts, but I'm handling it on a case-by-case basis. Ideally we only recommend hosts that are reputable companies, give WP a test account, run their own servers (no resellers), and most importantly who will provide first-tier support for WordPress, lessening the load on the support forums. I hope to put a few of these on wordpress.org proper sometime in January. Quality over quantity. I recommend this page be locked and deleted. matt 07:42, 27 Dec 2004 (GMT)

Editing

The page is locked AND included on the dead end pages. If "the powers that be" unlocks it for editing, these are the links I'd like to add:

  • First paragraph: ...thousands of hosting providers out there who meet those requirements. In addition to the software requirements, consider what you may need before you install and the step-by-step process of installing WordPress to make sure you know what is entailed....
  • If you will be blogging by email or using email features through Plugins in WordPress, consider the various server requirements for the different plugins for email.
