PLEASE make logging in a REQUIREMENT before any editing AT ALL can be done.
I know it's a wiki, I know that it's a free-form thing, that anyone can chip in but the sort of edit that just happened annoys the hell out of me.
If you want to login and correct or enhance something, that's fine, it's great / cool / okay by me. I really don't mind. Carthik and Craig have both edited and enhanced my work - I don't mind it.
But when I've got what I think is the punctuation police or the aesthetics dept breathing down my neck it really p*sses me off.
I don't know who these people are - this edit was by an unknown - and if all they want to do is swan in, correct this and that and breeze on thinking how great they are for helping with the wiki then.... aaaaaarrrrgggghhh....... it annoys me. A LOT.
Sorry if this offends you if you meant well in doing the edit, but PLEASE login.
Login should be mandatory. Soon. Now. Today.
DONE! :D
What's Carthik's Feature List if someone cares to elaborate?
Anyhow I added participant list just to get a feel how much of contribution I'd give
- The feature list was a page I created so that we can have a page that lists all of wp's features, as a sort of marketing tool. Please feel free to edit and improve it. I hope to move it into the main namespace after it looks respectable.

Q: Someone puts, "CSS. Stay away from CSS." What's that supposed to mean what CSS? Wordpress's? User not supposed to mess around with wp-layout.css? Huh?
--alphaoide 03:16, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)
A: It's because the CSS is such a huge subject - where do we start / stop ? It's certainly not that we don't want people playing with CSS, just that if we start to tackle this subject, we run the risk of focussing more on the CSS than WP.
- There are good resources around for CSS, so maybe we should just point at them.
- What we will have is a comprehensively commented default css for whatever ships with 1.3 (or whatever number it is called) plus Theme information and the forums for additional support.--Podz 09:49, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)
- I agree with Podz. The CSS should just be specific to what is supplied with WP. We can't be a CSS resource. This wiki is about using WordPress. As was suggested above, we can suggest some CSS resources, but the list can be very extensive and would need a lot of maintenance. I think that the best resource links to have would be w3schools, W3C itself, and perhaps Dave Shea's CSS Zen Garden. Other sections in the wiki specific to theme and template design will point people to other good resources, too. In my bookmarks, I have about four dozen links for CSS, all of them "good" in my books. I think it would be a mistake to build a huge list of links.

Q: Some stuff is version-specific, so in what version context are we making this documentation? 1.2, 1.3, or both (with version noted, of course)? (Needs to clarify because someone said somewhere that codex is meant for 1.3) --Joshua 05:52, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)
A: My preference is that we clearly label differences. Realistically, 1.2 (or 1.2.1 or 1.2.2) is going to be around for a long time, and so I feel we need to cater for such users.
Arguably, labelling differences will also highlight progress or features which could be overlooked otherwise. --Podz 09:49, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)
March 2005 Wiki Day
Hey, could you all provide links to lists for the things you are listing or wanting done on the front. For example, is there a list of specific items that need migrating from the old WIKI? Or is it snatch and grab whatever we want? And where can we find a list of all the articles that people are working on so we don't double up our labors?
Little things like that. Thanks! And who's bringing the steaks and beer? Where's the food signup list? I'll bring the sun lotion and bug spray!
Lorelle 04:47, 22 Feb 2005 (GMT)
Not one to stand around for too long, I went through the Old Wiki's "all pages" list (what a lot of crud!) The following is my list of things from the old Wiki (and other stuff) that I think should be in the Codex - unless they already are or someone is working on them. Some of these are posed as questions and others as references to Wiki Topics. This is not my to do list, though I've noted some things I can do, but more some thoughts on what would be nice to have here...unless it already is and I've missed it. Then cross it off the list with a link to the answer, or cross it off cuz it's useless or doesn't apply. This is just a quick list with no edits.:
- Acronyms - only plugin or anything automatic?
- Allowed file extensions for uploading
- File name formats - caps/lowercase/mixed - which is okay and which is not
-
Auto-shut-off comments - is this a hack, plugin, or part of code? Can you control comment time periods? plugin file plugin info (not compatible with WordPress v1.5)
- Auto Shut Off Posts ? Necessary?
- 404 - Tracking lost links and posts (is there a method within WordPress, WordPress stats, or any method to track and fix "files not found"?)
- Bookmarklet (Favlet) for "instant" grabbing a web page link to post on your site
- External Links - options for treating external links differently, like in the Codex
- CVS - Nightly builds - We need some kind of explanation for what this is. I hear it mentioned on the forums but there is little or no info on this and how to find it. Doesn't mean an open invitation but information. This is sort of obsolete, given the fact that WP now uses Subversion, but an SVN guide is in the planning stages. I agree that there should be some words around the new testing policy and list and the upcoming changes to the forums where only stable builds will be supported. NuclearMoose 03:47, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- How to answer comments and not get "moderated" as the admin.
- How to backup files, not just the database
- Docs Tutor - http://wiki.wordpress.org/?pagename=DocsTutor - is the start of a good idea that went no where. This could be useful as a "Basics" or "Getting Started" article on learning to blog. I can do this if no one else takes it.
-
Learning (or at least finding answers) PHP
- Set custom number of comments per page.
- Sorting by category in the Edit section of the admin panel - possible? If so, how about a how to article.
-
View page - not just "site" - possible, if so how?
- Dead Link checking - from Link Manager, any way to check for dead links? Article on how to?
-
Keywords and Meta Tags - are they still good, do they work, how do they work in WordPress?
- Control of Next and Previous - order of posts - how to connect series of posts that belong together like an ongoing article without date having anything to do with it.
- Changing from HTML to XML - what needs to change in the HTML -
and other non-closed tags...what needs to be fixed for those pasting in HTML directly? Turn on or off the XML verifier and fixer? Why? Don't you mean XHTML? NuclearMoose 03:47, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- WordPress Hebrew/Arab Localization and Templates - I can fix this up for posting, but I'd change it to Right-to-Left Language Layouts with the Hebrew and Arabic issues as subtitles since these are not the only languages with rtl issues.
- Internal links - Linking one post to another, examples and how to (use php, index.php?p=345, permalink, http....or relative?)
- Javascript - Using it and does it work and how to use it? I don't think we need to cover this. Along with info about PHP, I think that some information on where to get PHP and JS help is appropriate.
- Breach of security - what to do if someone or something gets in and changes your blog or files?
- Size issues - we need to know how big (long) we can make our posts before things break. Size matters, and if it really matters, how to we change things in the database. Along with this, how to break up a post into smaller chunks (nextpage tags) and is there a way to add a plugin or hack that will include something like Read all pages - Page 1, 2, 3, 4 So the viewer can choose one big long page or to move from window to window.
Print.css - Article about what it is and how to create your own, and what it's important. (I can do this one, too.) Print.css is obsolete in WP v1.5. A similar function appears to be called internally.
- Where is this info so we can link to it from the FAQ, etc. so people will know. I didn't know and I've already created a print.css for my site. I see no reason why we can't document this. However 1.5 does this, it's not always what the site owner may want. Print.css is a legitimate topic to cover. NuclearMoose 03:47, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Adding Search to your WordPress - how the one included works, how to deal with Advanced Search, how to possibly improve it, and how to have cute and helpful 404 pages. This is two separate topics. NuclearMoose 03:47, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Optimizing your CSS, PHP, and HTML for faster loading. This is best done as a resource page. I don't think we can or should try and make this a big section in Codex. NuclearMoose 03:47, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Search Engine Friendly - what to do to help your WordPress site shake hands nicely with search engines, and what WP already does through the use of permalinks to make it very SE-friendly.
- From Main Page - About or Getting Started - needs list of links to foreign language WordPress versions and help.

Is "Port" in glossary? I see a lot of references to this word and to me it is booze, a place to wait out a storm and leave girls behind, and related to computer hardware "ports". I see a lot of references to "I ported something in WordPress..." what is that and do we have a reference to explain it? Sounds like entries for the Glossary. - Why can't I see the graphics in my Write - Preview Admin page even though I can see them in my post? And if I can see them in my Preview, why can't I see them in my Post? And why doesn't the CSS apply within the Preview so I can really see what I'm working on?
- Mobile/WAP and other "versions" of WordPress - in other words - is WordPress ready for the "future"?
There are also a lot of things from http://faq.wordpress.net/ that might need to be in our own FAQ. Anyone checked those?
Also, I'm digging through piles and boxes of papers trying to unpack and finish "moving in" and somewhere in this mess is a 40 or 50 some page WordPress FAQ I printed out ages ago that is so stuffed with WordPress tips, tricks, techniques, and advice, I adore it. I've read through it a dozen times trying to figure out how to do small things... but I can't find it yet in the mess. Anyone familiar with this monstrosity of FAQs? If so, give a link and let's look at what can come off of it and into the Codex. There's some really awesome stuff in there. Maybe it's from faq.wordpress.net but that site doesn't look familiar and Google isn't turning it up either. I'll keep looking.
Added Later - as I think of them
- How to separate comments from trackbacks
-
Specific page that lists how to get help for using THEMES (I can do this, too) with links to all the helping CSS and Theme files. A bit redundant but the specific title of HELP WITH THEMES would be a good connector of Theme related issues. There are some issues coming up not covered by the general Using Themes page that could be covered here or redirected.
-
How to Link to...specific category, Pages, posts, and other things - using permalinks and not.
- Defining Order of Posts - as they show up on front page, archives (specific category pages), by category, by date, alphabetically. How to keep article posts "in series" connected via next and previous without the nextpage option tag.
- NO RSS information??? I did a search on the codex for RSS and there ain't nothing folks! We need something since I know nuthin' about dis, and a lot of people need to.
Lorelle 21:36, 1 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Hacks for Admin Pages - like how to add sort by category to POST panel, and how to change number of posts visible (from default of 15) - simple hacks to improve Admin panels for individual needs.
- $query stuff - Lots of requests for explaining these and how to use them.
-
LOOP LOOP LOOP examples - if/else statements, diverse examples....redundant request but desperately needed.
-
How to link to categories without absolute references.

- Awesome stuff, Lorelle. NuclearMoose 03:47, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks. Is there a specific sign up list to do things or are assignments handed out or is wiki day a free for all? Lorelle 13:08, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Generally speaking, we all gather on #wp-docs and just do a "I'm working on this" kind of a thing.NuclearMoose 21:06, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Huh. Didn't even know the channel existed. Perhaps we should point that out somewhere. --MDAWaffe - Talk 21:46, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)
So is #wp-docs an IRC channel? Whazzah? Lorelle 22:56, 14 Mar 2005 (UTC)

- Me, too! Join the club, everyone! Lorelle 22:01, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Went through the list and checked more things off. Am working on page that lists wanted articles like this. Stay tuned. Lorelle 00:08, 7 May 2005 (UTC)
How is Wiki Day Gonna Work?
I haven't heard any details, so how is this all going to work? Any coordination or just free for all? Lorelle 17:12, 23 Mar 2005 (UTC)
