User Felix--thank you for your changes to the Upgrading WordPress document. I've have put back the first several paragraphs. I know they are 'less friendly'. The detailed information on the upgrade paths was put there so people would know explicitly, what instructions to follow, otherwise people keep asking in the forum, "Do I have to do ALL the upgrade steps for this upgrade?" The dark severe warning on the MySQL requirement was put there to stop people from starting to do the upgrade, then finding out that their host/database didn't meet the requirements.
I will review your changes to the Quick and Detailed Instructions. One point I see already is that the Deactivate All Plugins did not exist before 2.2 so that needs to be taken into account.
Thanks again for you contributions to Codex.
I just wanted, after remarking that Felix did some good writing on User:Felix/Upgrading WordPress, to ask if he felt there was need for something in between Upgrading_WordPress and Upgrading_WordPress_Extended
The very strict MIL-SPEC guidelines I've written to specify three levels, but that's usually over-kill. I'm thinking that if the first page was dead simple (i.e. mostly warnings and cautions and "You will be doing this and that, you will need such and so", like an executive summary.) and the "Extended" was gnarly (with strict warning to consult level 1 or at least level 2 first), that might create space for what Felix feels is needed. --bentrem 18:11, 17 Dec 2007 (UTC)
I created User:Felix/Upgrading_WordPress so that the editing of the text can be segregated from the discussion User_talk:Felix/Upgrading_WordPress.
