User talk:NuclearMoose/2004

NuclearMoose 18:21, 31 Dec 2004 (GMT) Hey, everyone.

Would like a discussion regarding translated pages. Early on, I had some people help with Dutch translations, and as you can see in All Pages (http://codex.wordpress.org/Special:Allpages) I prepended those pages with nl:. My thinking around this was that it would help to organize the master file listing to group those language pages together. Now I see that we have EduardoE working hard doing Spanish translations. When looking on the master page list, it is not immediately obvious where those Spanish-language files are (i.e., what they are named.) Having the es: prepend would group them visually, but I know that there have been some concerns about doing this in the past.

Ideas and discussion, please!

Another thing, how do we link to these localized pages from the English pages? Do we just use the Translationbar template?

Upon looking at his first few pages, I thought similarly. I think it would be nice to have subdirs, like codex.wordpress.org/es/page_name and to have the visitor forwarded to the right language subdir, after detecting the browser's lang setting.

Else, the es: prefixing seems good - maybe we should make language specific namespaces, to avoid foo.

I definitely think we should have separate namespaces for separate languages. I had actually kind of assumed that's how we'd be doing it, but I knew it wasn't set up properly yet to do so, so I've just been waiting for Matt or someone to get around to setting it up. :-) I think the subdir route is perfect; Wikipedia uses subdomains, but we're already in a subdomain and more than one subdomain tends to look odd, so a subdir is the next best thing. We can do some browser sniffing at the start to redirect users to the proper localization directory from the root.

morganiq...awesome! Thanks for the links. Should be some good reading there.

Testing to see if I discovered a bug....

Hey, considering what happened a day or so back, shouldn't this User: subpage be deprecated? :) And thanks for the thanks, NM. It's all part of moderatin'. Kaf 06:39, 2 Jan 2005 (GMT)
