Talk:Combating Comment Spam

Hey, thanks for putting this together, Podz. With the barrage of comment spam hitting my friends and me recently, it's good to have a resource to help address the problem. --Clay 17 Dec 2004

Links to Matt's and drdave's plugins added --Podz 10:04, 19 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Latest links added, plus small text addition --Podz 22:05, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Link to Blacklist replaced. Now points to a download page rather than a direct script download --Podz 09:57, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Time to Subdivide?

This is now getting pretty long with a lot of wonderful helpful tips. Is it time to subdivide the wealth a little? Possibly breaking up the Q&A from the solutions? I don't know, but I know this page is going to GROW and we need to start planning ahead. Lorelle 03:07, 21 Feb 2005 (GMT)

This is actually a good size and I don't anticipate much growth remaining. As other solutions are added, non-working and obsolete solutions will be deleted. In a bout a month, I will go through and remove any of the v1.2-only plugins and hacks. Also, the Q&A is really only a FAQ. We won't add every Q&A to this list, and as far as an FAQ, it's pretty much done. -MacManX
I spent about an hour reorganizing stuff, so that the table of contents is more helpful. Please feel free to reorganize and improve this further. I beleive we could make it easier for someone to choose a plugin, instead of just listing the plugins like we have, by having a paragraph, or a bunch of questions, asking what they want to do, linked to the specific plugin descriptions on the page. Again, this might be a tough ask.

"Met-su-yon!!!!" Which is Hebrew for EXCELLENT (but means so much more). It looks wonderful. Lorelle 21:06, 21 Feb 2005 (GMT)

Subdiving Plugins from Article

I was wondering if it might be a better idea to link to the Comment Spam Plugins on the Plugin page rather than keeping a secondary list here. This way, they would be more up-to-date since that list will probably better maintained than this page. Just a thought. Lorelle 17:07, 8 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Actually, that's why I linked the spam plugins to this page. It's easier for me to maintain this page as a whole (handle hacks that are made obsolete by plugins, plugins that can also handle trackback spam, FAQ that can be solved by plugins or hacks, etc). Don't worry, cleanup is on the way and slotted as a personal project during the wiki weekend. -MacManX
Good to know there is some thinking going on behind all of this ;-) and on a personal note, have they handed out assignments or is there a list of assignments to sign up for made yet? I'm still waiting to hear. Or do we just say "I'm doing this on Wiki Day" somewhere? Lorelle 19:51, 9 Mar 2005 (UTC)
AFAIK, there are no assignments yet.

Longer hacks on separate page?'

So I'd like to whip up a quick sheet on renaming wp-comments-post.php and wp-trackback.php. It's a bit long to address in the Hacks section, I assume it should get its own page? 'Renaming wp-comments-post.php and wp-trackback.php' seems a bit long for a title, what to call it? yami 03:34, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Captchas are hacks

MacManX, Neither of the two Captcha hacks listed are truly plugins, which is why I moved them under Hacks, as a seperate section. I was wondering why that was undone. Also, having header for Plugins, instead of bold words makes semantic sense, and makes for better organization. I beleive it also makes the TOC more useful, though a little larger.

Carthik 18:18, 21 Feb 2005 (GMT)
Well, my original reasoning was that the Captcha in question were implemented as plugins, which sets them apart from the rest of the hacks. Still, it would be nice to separate the Captcha from the Hacks as we do get a lot of requests for Captcha from the forums. Also, I agree that linking to each individual plugin via the TOC is useful, but when we add more plugins in the future, this will make the TOC way too big. In the future, we should probably consider separate pages for Plugins, Captcha/hacks, etc. But let's wait until the end of this month. By the end of the month, I'll remove all plugins and hacks which aren't v1.5 compatible or are obsolete. Then we'll have a good outlook on the size of the page. -MacManX

Removing v1.2 References

I'm getting worried about all this talk of removing references to v1.2. While this is nice and all, isn't it getting a little ahead of the game? Is this part of the plan by the WordPress Lords? Honestly, there are a lot of people who still believe Strayhorn is beta and will wait until the dust settles for three to six months. We need to keep some of the 1.2 stuff around for at least six months or so...for those old, conservatives out there. Hey, I'm a techno wiz but I waited for a year before going into Windows XP figuring that most of the bugs and patches were out by then...a wise decision I may add. Some of us have learned that living on the cutting edge can slice you up.

Just a little conservatism. Lorelle 21:01, 21 Feb 2005 (GMT)

The original concept was that the Codex would be v1.5-only. If there are any lone v1.2 users, there's always Podz's page. I think I'll remove the v1.2 anti-spam info once this month is over, or once v1.5.1 is released, whichever comes last. Removing the v1.2-only items will also lower the likelihood of confusion. -MacManX

I vote to remove them when 1.6 or 2.0 comes out, which ever takes longest...hee hee. Lorelle 21:22, 21 Feb 2005 (GMT)

OK, maybe I'll just move them into a special "v1.2-only" section. -MacManX

You mean I have THAT much influence...hee hee. It might be a wise idea. Let's see what other people think about it. Thanks. Lorelle 23:16, 21 Feb 2005 (GMT)

You're a heavy-class Codex contributer, I value your opinion. -MacManX
Shucks, gosh, golly...I'm blushing. The things I do to get a compliment. And the fact that it comes from the BEST contributor....okay, let's stop now before I throw up. Lorelle 00:03, 22 Feb 2005 (GMT)
I'm pretty sure that you've contributed more than me. -MacManX

Links to types of Plugins

I agree with Tor, "here" links are kind of annoying. But using plain links without section titles removes "Captcha Plugins", for example, from the TOC. I've made sections whose titles are the links themselves. It's just an idea. Make if better if you can. --MDAWaffe - Talk 22:22, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)
