Re: Comment on using the Datedpage template

I intended to use the Datedpage and Oldpage templates to note that the page could be obsolete. I didn't check the pages for compatibility with the newest version; I just marked them if they were not updated for more than 4 months. These marked pages could then be checked by people doing maintenance, and if they are not obsolete, they could remove the note.

If you would like me to use the template instead as a notice that the page is definitely obsolete, that is fine with me.

Also, thanks for reminding me about Matt's message. I'll put them at the bottom now.

Smart Update Pinger

Dear Michael,

Roel Van de Paar here from Australia (owner of ultimateplugins.com) - I wanted to speak with you about the Smart Update Pinger.

I noticed you edited my addition to the codex page here:

First of all, if I may clarify 2 things:

  1. It was not my intention to 'spam' the codex.
  2. I have nothing to do with the owner of maxblogpress.org (Pawan Agrawal from Nepal), except that I asked him at one point if I could use his WordPress theme, which he refused, and so I developed my own theme based on the default Kubrick theme.

I wrote the update for the Smart Update Pinger some time ago, have been using it on my own blogs successfully, and have been thinking of releasing it to the public for a long time.

The plugin is licensed as GNU/GPL as I do not want to charge people for plugins.

If you download the one from maxblogpress.org you will see that this plugin is nearly 100% different. My plugin is based on Christian Davén's Smart Update Pinger plugin (who has discontinued the development of his plugin - see http://daven.se/usefulstuff/wordpress-plugins.html), as such, this new version ads quite a bit of functionality to the existing Smart Update Pinger plugin:

  1. Works for all wp 2.0+ releases
  2. For future posts, services are only pinged when the post has appeared on your blog.
  1. Reverse (newest entries first) logging
  2. More detailed ping & error logging
  3. Auto-selects whether to do an extended or normal ping depending on server capability
  4. For extended pings, it uses the new URL instead of (and together with) just the homepage URL to ping (resulting in a much higher quality ping).
  • With an extended ping (and most ping services now support extended pings) you can send the NEW URL (ie. domain.com/article) as well, instead of just the homepage url.

I am planning on releasing many more plugins (some that have cost me a lot of money to develop) as GNU/GPL plugins.

The reason why I swapped Christian's link for mine is because it really is the updated version of his plugin (and so the old link is irrelevant). I have been in contact with Christian and he will place a link to the new plugin on his own site as well as you can see from this e-mail:

I noticed this morning that you reverted the Update_Services page back a version from some time ago.

With your approval, could you change/add the following;

Current:

  • For bloggers who want to notify services of new posts, but not send any notification when editing previously published posts, there is a simple, user-friendly plugin.

New:

  • For bloggers who want to notify services of new and future posts, but not send any notification when editing previously published posts, there is a Smart Update Pinger plugin available (requires free registration to download). The MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer offers a similar plugin at the WordPress Extend Plugins site.

As per the above, the old link to Christian's page is no longer needed as it is outdated, and I also modified the text "but requires registration and password to download" to "requires free registration to download" as receiving the password is the result of registering.

An better alternative may be:

  • The Smart Update Pinger plugin (requires free registration to download) provides correct extended ping request handling, future post pings, logging, and avoids sending any ping notification when editing previously published posts. The MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer plugin offers a similar solution at the WordPress Extend Plugins site.

I hope this clarifies some things and puts us on the right path again.

Hi Michael, thanks for looking into this. I have one more suggested change:
Instead of:

  • The Smart Update Pinger (requires registration) and the MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer plugins provide future post pings, logging, and avoid sending any ping notification when editing previously published posts. The Smart Update Pinger also provides correct extended ping request handling.
This because I checked the MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer and it does not handle extended pings correctly as you can see in this code:
$client->query('weblogUpdates.extendedPing', get_settings('blogname'), $home, get_bloginfo('rss2_url'), get_bloginfo('rss2_url'))
It should be:
$client->query('weblogUpdates.extendedPing', get_option('blogname'), $home, $SUP_guid, get_bloginfo('rss2_url'))
and so the text would be incorrect now.
Also, in further cleaning up this page, the following can be removed:
  • If you want to ping multiple URIs, (e.g. yourweblog.com, weblog.yourweblog.vom, www.yourweblog.com/weblog) when you update your blog, try this simple and easy to use plugin; Multi URI Ping Plugin for wordpress
As this plugin no longer works (it was released in 2005 for wordpress 1.5, 1.5.1, 1.5.2 and 1.6 alpha) - when installed it gives the error message "Multi Ping Error - You are not a ADMIN" (being signed in as admin).

Adding_Asides

Hi Michael,

I figure you're the legendary Michael Heilemann so I am bothering you on that basis plus that you were one of the last to edit the Adding_Asides codex. I'm new, so I don't want to mess things up, but...

Referring to the section on Adding Asides to the Sidebar, I figure there is one too many <?php } ?> in the instructions. When removing the chosen Aside category from The_Loop in index.php it says to add a <?php } ?> just before the <?php endwhile; ?> but this causes my pages to fail.

Because there is no opening curly brace, there is no need to add a closing brace, methinks. I think adding the single line <?php if (in_category('14') && is_home() ) continue; ?> is enough and is an independent statement with no curly braces to balance.

Could you please check and let me know. If I'm wrong I'll get better, if I am right I'll make the changes. I am creating my first new theme, naturally from a Default starting point and this is good stuff, but flawed.

I've been aggregating more and more ... I actually deleted FeedDemon from my desktop ... using BlogLinges and even google.reader less and less ... more and more, NetVibes w/full set of tabs, and output from Yahoo!Pipes (for e.g. output from my AceBlogs pipe) ... which brings me to this:

heh ... while snooping to find out who "ask one of the automattic personnel the operators of this wiki" would be I made a discovery: two of the feeds I've been reading in NetVibes modules actually come from wordpress.org and they more/less do what I was thinking of, i.e. planet.wordpress.org and wordpress.org/development ... so there's no real need. I saw that in the same edit you removed also sunsilk etcetera. Maybe you thought it was a spamlink? we're a real company, we have a real wordpress website, we also made plugins for wordpress...

I put a wrog explaination... we ALREADY have plugins, we already love and use wordpress on our website, i thounght it would be nice for both having the link inside famous blogs section.

Any time you're ready to move it, go ahead. I'm pretty sure I'm done messing with it. I'll make a point of not editing it anymore until I see it in its proper resting place.

Hey, when you moved the get_post_custom_keys over, you mistyped the title and put an 's' after "post". whoops... it was my error. I had all three pages named incorrectly. I went ahead and "moved" all three to their properly named pages, and will soon move the other pages myself (I just discovered how to do that)Stevish 20:19, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Also, I have finished with get_post_custom and get_post_custom_values if you'd like to move those over too. They all have links pointing to each other (or at least where each other should be).

Let me know if there are any problems, or if there is a way for me to move them myself.

2.5 FAQ

There is a typo (you refer to an "export links" link when I think you meant "import links") on your 2.5 FAQ page. I was going to edit it, but since it's a subdirectory of your user page, I'm not sure of the proper etiquette... should I consider subdirectories of user pages off limits?

Deleting Images

I assume that I don't have the proper permissions to delete an image. That said, there is another image that has been uploaded this morning that has nothing to do with codex. I marked it as "rfd", but thought I'd mention it here to you.

If there is a way for me to delete things like that (that are clearly done out of malice or random fun), let me know, so that I can fix them in the future.

Exploits pages

Here: I moved the three Exploit pages to your User area while those subjects get expanded. Thank you for contributing to Codex.

I had actually expanded these pages as much as I was planning, with the expectation that they would be added to by other users of the wiki. One of the forum threads had a specific request to name and centralize the discussion; the other thread is long, abusive, and difficult for non-technical users to decipher.

Is there an existing location for collection of information on wordpress exploits and solutions that I'm missing?

Codex Special Pages

Hi Michael

I'm still getting used to the Codex, so much of it is slow and learn as I go; apologies up front if this is a dumb question.

In the Special pages:dead end pages I've found an instance of a page that shows up in the list (http://codex.wordpress.org/El_Arte_es_la_Piel_del_Alma), but has been deleted by you according to the discussion (http://codex.wordpress.org/index.php?title=Talk:El_Arte_es_la_Piel_del_Alma&action=edit)...stuck now - not sure what to do.

Any suggestions would be great.
